In episode #6 of My 2.0, guest Jenn Stofferahn, Vice President and Co-owner of TFN Training shares her transition from major gifts fundraising in the nonprofit world to barbells, strength training and personal training. While her transition may have been facilitated by meeting her future husband, who was an established expert in the powerlifting space, she had been ready for a transition. She negotiated with her then employer to work part time, while she went to fitness school to study the science and hone her skills.

Jenn draws the similarities between her two careers in how they both require to build deep, personal relationships. With a long view on end goals. And how they both require creativity and flexibility to stay in step with the client and their goals.

She talks about the uncertainty that comes with transition, and how, if possible, we want to make sure the other people and things in our ecosystem remain stable as we journey through our transition.

The challenges she experienced with transition with feeling the imposter syndrome. And struggling with the chicken and egg situation of experience v/s skills gap. And she advises we bridge that gap through self-confidence.

She goes on to debunks common transition myths that:

  • We need to have a complete skill set for the transitioning domain. She describes that as a chicken and egg situation that we bridge using our self-confidence.

  • Certain domains are more women-friendly than the others. She went from a traditionally male-dominated field to a male-dominated one.
