Melissa Qazi: Medicine To Corporate

In episode #4 of My 2.0, guest Melissa Qazi, Associate Director, Healthcare Professions and Emerging Markets at Kaplan talks about a year long process while at medical school, where she questioned her prescribed path to becoming a practicing physician. On what seemed like a long year of being alone with her guilt and self-doubt questions and the clarity of purpose that came to her through intense work on her personal development and unwavering support from her friends and family.

She talks about the importance of clarity of purpose that helped her find her new domain, to explain her new career path to others. And the importance of her supporting ecosystem that helped her find her new calling in healthcare education and product management.

She goes on to debunks common transition myths that:

  • We need to have a complete skill set for the transitioning domain. Instead, she feels we need to be clear about the why, and use it to build a clear narrative on the relatedness of the transitioning domain.

  • That we need to have existing relationships in the new domain. She thinks given how intricately socially connected we already are, we simply need to build a relatedness with person(s) in the new domain.

Her recommended toolkits for transition are:

  • Support system that allows us to share our thoughts and questions without fear of shame or judgement

  • A forum/channel for personal development work

  • A morning ritual focussed on the whole personal development
